What is /b/ on 4chan?
The place where happiness goes to die. The place where virginities get challenged. It’s where you have a good laugh and then get disgusted in a minute. /b/ Is hell, and I love it.
On 4chan, /b/ refers to the “Random” board, one of the website’s imageboard sections. 4chan is an anonymous English-language imageboard website where users can post and discuss various topics.

The /b/ board, also known as “/b/ – Random,” is one of the most infamous and popular boards on 4chan. It is known for its unfiltered and unpredictable content, including memes, internet culture, discussions, images, and sometimes controversial or explicit material. The content on /b/ can be quite diverse and change rapidly as users post new threads and comments.
Due to its unregulated nature, the /b/ board has gained a reputation for being a place where anything goes, which has led to both humorous and controversial content being shared. As a result, users are often advised to exercise caution when visiting /b/ as it may contain content unsuitable for all audiences.
It’s important to note that 4chan’s content and discussions can vary greatly across different boards, and each board may have its own specific rules and culture. Users should know the guidelines and use the website responsibly and respectfully.
What is 4chan?
4chan is an English imageboard forum where people discuss various topics anonymously.
Moot, the admin of 4chan, copied the website code from a similar Japanese website ( Futaba Channel ) and translated it into English. He envisioned 4chan as a place where people could anonymously share their opinions about various anime-related topics without the hassles of attaching an identity to their opinions.
It has gained notoriety over the years, especially because of its /b/ board, which is accurately referred to as the asshole of the Internet.
However, there are many boards other than /b/ about topics like Technology, Anime/Manga, International, DIY, etc. The quality of posts varies from board to board and thread to thread.
“4chan is like a dumpster, it looks like garbage but sometimes offers invaluable treasures to those who seek.” – Anonymous.
How powerful is the 4chan community?
They are powerful enough to help someone to be arrested.
In 2009, Kenny (Chris) Glenn posted two YouTube videos abusing a lovely cat named Dusty.
The 4chan community (mostly /b) got pissed off immediately and decided to do something about it. A lot of people examined those videos in detail. They try to get all the information to help find that guy. After 24 hours, they found his name and his MySpace account. After 48 hours, he was arrested.
How did 4chan become so toxic?
4chan was designed to be toxic.
4chan was designed as an anonymous board with sections for controversy, sex and adult images. There was no moderation, no protection, and, importantly – it was patterned after 2chan, an already-existing Japanese board with a reputation for high toxicity. It attracted an infantile segment of the Internet audience (including myself, so I say that lovingly.) The board I frequented was mostly pictures people wanted to share.
As 4chan grew in popularity, the in-jokes formed, many of which were grotesque and not at all funny, like Pedobear, and the jokes became grimmer and grimmer.
In the late 2000s, 4chan started to run panels at conventions. I was working security for a major convention (and had, by that time, been hated on by 4chan by name twice, a high honour in those days), so my friends and I volunteered to watch the panel.
It was like listening to the grunting of animals. The person at the head of a room would shriek or grunt, and the people in the audience would shriek or grunt in response. I could not make heads nor tails of much of what was said; it was already bound by so much in-group jargon. The audience was mostly men.
That was my last experience with 4chan. The board I used to frequent still exists; I no longer visit. They hated on me once more by name, but even the residents of that board were tired of it, which was funny.
Then Anonymous happened. This audience of mostly men, primed to call-and-response like a church congregation or a team or…an army, flocked to be chaotic neutral but ended up being shitboxes because “chaotic neutral” is not neutral, DUH. Causing chaos means people’s lives will be disrupted. The alt-right siphoned the worst of this nascent army off, and the rest got taken down relatively quickly. What’s left is a little corner of the Internet still filled with dank memes and boards where people post art of anime and stuff they like. And filled with late-comers who believe being rude to other people makes them cool.

Which internet community is more toxic: 4chan or 2chan?
Regarding toxicity, 2chan does not even make the top 10 list of the most hostile Chan communities. 4chan and 8chan have the most broad communities, ranging from hobbyists to the most bitter basements-dwellers.

Why is 4chan so toxic?
I think the combination of toxic masculinity, anonymity & feeling outcasted are the main things that make it so toxic.
It was originally started as an anime & manga forum, which naturally attracts “nerds”, & “weirdos”, & “outcasts”. When you combine this with anonymity, these people who already tend to feel different & outcasted have an outlet for their anger & resentment where they can interact with like-minded people.
Because these people are anonymous, they can say vile racist & sexist things & share these thoughts with no repercussions or interventions. This is dangerous as they can bounce their corrupt views off each other, share graphic images & encourage each other to do terrible things such as internet trolling, mass shootings, rape etc. The website is full of sordid & fucked up people, school shooters, incels, perverts & far-right hate preachers, to name a few. They blame society, women & ethnic minorities for their problems but refuse to look at their shortcomings.
Their role models in society are the likes of Hitler, Elliot Rodger & Brenton Tarrant. This is why normal people avoid this website because they know their views are corrupt & wrong. If you try to correct them, they will troll you & say you’re “too sensitive” & “politically correct”.
The way this website is has gotten out of hand & could have been avoided if it wasn’t anonymous. If you look at websites such as Formspring, Ask, etc., which were made to ask people anonymous questions, you will see how, again, because people are anonymous, they can say horrible things without any consequences.
Also, because most users are men, it shows toxic masculinity in its most raw & unfiltered form.
What are some good things that 4chan has done to the world?
Ah, 4chan.
In the media, they’re known as terrorist hackers who plot hate crimes… They’re just shitposters who have way too much free time on the internet.
But these shitposters do have WAY too much free time. Anon doesn’t have a goal, only to shitpost, destroy, and do it for the lulz.
So, in May of 2016, Anon found a camp in Syria where insurgents were being trained to fight the infidels.
Anon then went to work.
That time, 4chan found a terrorist training camp and called a Russian airstrike.
Anon and pals used footage from the video to locate the training camp using Google Maps. After verifying that the location was where the camp was, I used a contact named “Ivan Sidorenko”, who is connected to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
On May 31, 2016, the camp was bombed by Russian aircraft.
So, not only is 4chan good at finding scumbags and bringing them to justice, they can add “certified terrorist killers” to their list of achievements as well.
What is the problem with 4chan?
4chan is what you get when people can say and post whatever they feel like. A lot of it is downright disgusting, vile and provocative content. But what many people forget is that it was the birthplace of several movements and action groups. Years back, the posters were just what many people call nerds. People who needed to be more socially adept or alone would talk about random topics with strangers.
More recently, 4chan (specifically its /pol/ board) has been getting a bad rep because it was instrumental in the rise of the alt-right. I think “alt-right” is just a softer term for “far-right”. The ideologies are the same. People don’t realise that the /pol/ board has regularly discussed white supremacy. Because (let’s be honest) most of the posters there are white people. A small percentage of them are white supremacists, and they perceive 4chan as the perfect forum to voice their ideas because it’s all anonymous.
It is understandable for 4chan to get a lot of hate. People have posted incredibly offensive pictures and responded to images with insensitive jokes. Something a poster would not do outside in the real world. 4chan posters have pulled a lot of insensitive pranks and posts just for the “lulz”.
How I perceive 4chan reflects society (specifically, Western and urban societies elsewhere).
A lot of good movements did Spring out of 4chan as well. Several paedophiles were convicted due to the efforts of members on 4chan. The Anonymous hacktivist movement sprang out of 4chan. LulzSec came out of 4chan. 4chan members spearheaded Operation Chanology. Several 4chan members used Internet resources to help protestors during the Arab Spring (in Egypt and Tunisia). During those days, most 4chan members saw themselves as a force for good. And despite the vile images posted, they still felt they had a goal they were working for. In their way, they thought they were making the world a better place.
However, 4chan has changed in the past two or three years. More and more members supportive of the far-right movement became members and started having provocative conversations, mocking other races and groups. 4chan posters always used to be apolitical, mocking politicians everywhere regardless of country, race, or religion (very insensitively, I must say). The far-right hijacked the boards with Trump’s campaign and propagated much hate. Propaganda rarely existed on 4chan, and now it is a common theme. With that, it led to the rise of offensive memes, cartoons, and posts against people of other races. For example, a quick search on 4chan can find offensive posts and memes against blacks, Latinos, Mexicans, Jews, Muslims, Arabs, Indians, etc. One would rarely (rarely) find anything of the same mocking white people (specifically urban middle-class or rich white people. There were a lot of posts about rednecks).
I would only recommend people who feel they are still forming an opinion about a certain topic to go on 4chan. To go on that site, one has to be firmly rooted in their political beliefs. And if they’re not, they must be ready to be offended.
Is 4chan the cesspool of humanity? I don’t know, and I cannot say that. One can find many good people on 4chan and many truly vile people as well. A lot of good came out from 4chan as well. These days, there are too many horrible people on 4chan.
/b/ is a random board on 4chan where you can post almost anything.
In other words, it’s a containment board for spam (so other boards don’t get flooded with mindless content), so there’s quite a lot of porn. So much porn. Not to mention gore, furry content, hentai, you laugh, you lose threads, pretty much anything you could want.
Lots of content, but expect it to be something other than quality.
Mainly a beginner board. Expect lots of underage posters.
(To be honest, if you want a proper containment board with more content and less spam, try /r9k/. No one can post an unoriginal reply, so you have more to interact with than thousands of nudes. Then again, I wonder if orbiting or trap baiting is better.
/b/ is a 4chan board with random content. To many people, it is just a joke. But much of the mischief done by 4chan was because of this blog. This year (2016), it is degrading because of nonsense threads.
Most posts are of Porn, Adult content, and many Rate People/Thing ones.
Here, anything can happen at any time. Many superior ones (those with greater experience) use this board; this board is a personality-changing one.
P.S.- I advise you to have fun with this one; this will be a turning point in your life.
What is the problem with 4chan?
4chan is the cesspool of humanity.
You are responsible for the things you do under your name. Everyone on 4chan is anonymous. They are responsible for nothing. So they just hurt people for fun.
Sane, healthy people oppose this behaviour even if they are given anonymity. So they do not frequent 4chan.
But for unhealthy people with twisted minds and distorted points of view, it is the only place in the world where they can voice their hatred.
Most people on 4chan are loners and social outcasts. 4chan is a place for them to vent their rage against society. Many mass shooters have frequented 4chan.
I’m not saying all loners or social outcasts are vile. That is far from the truth. Many of them are the victims of society.
But the ones on 4chan chose to be vile and toxic.
People on 4chan lack empathy. They don’t or hardly understand human feelings. They are aware of it and sometimes call themselves “robots”.
They hurt people for fun and say it is okay because it is “banter”.
They say Hitler’s atrocities are also “banter”.
They say mass shootings and hate crimes are also “banter”.
They laugh at the dead bodies of children in a war. Enough said.
The most ridiculous thing is that these people think they are normal, just having some black humour. What group of normal people laughs at dead children?
They can’t be more wrong. They are abnormal.
They remind me of drug addicts who say they are normal people just having some fun. Addicts rarely admit they have an addiction.
“I am normal. I’m just having some of something.”
People on 4chan are addicted to hatred.
It is the perfect environment to develop a mental illness. If you already have one, aggravate it.
I advise eschewing 4chan and letting those psychopaths rot there on their own.
Give them no attention because that’s what they crave the most.
What are some good things that 4chan has done to the world?
One of the more well-known “4chan is good” stories is that of Dusty the Cat.
Wikipedia summary:
On February 15, 2009, two videos featuring the physical abuse of a domestic cat named Dusty by a person calling himself “Timmy” were posted on YouTube. The 4chan community was able to track down the originator of the videos, a fourteen-year-old from Lawton, Oklahoma, and passed his details to his local police department. As a result, a suspect was arrested, and the cat was treated by a veterinarian and taken to a safe place.
What is it like to post on the 4chan board /b/?
It’s just plain stupid. I wasted productive years of my life believing in whatever /b/ did.
Quality content generation could be better than some of the other boards in 4chan. Spiderman hijacking, Random trolls, and random porn make /b/ less entertaining than it once was.
Is 4chan dying? If so, why?
Not from what I can tell.
I’ve been browsing regularly for the past five years, and the amount of active content at any time has consistently been around 150 gigs.
Why do people like 4chan? What is 4chan on the Internet?

4chan is like an ocean: very vast, very deep; some have different business with it, and some don’t like it altogether.
The most attractive characteristic of 4chan is the combination of anonymity and low-profile moderation. You put the anonymous mask on, and all your filters are off. You can say almost whatever, and most likely, you won’t be sanctioned by moderators. Of course, it has limits, but they’re so far away that normal people aren’t bothered by them.
I need clarification on what 4chan is in the Internet scheme. Some might say they’re freedom warriors; some might say they’re rejected from society. It’s too complex of a site to make any guesses.
I occasionally lurk 4chan. I like the wallpaper and anime boards. I don’t usually get into the wilder territory because it’s just not my thing, but hey, to each their own.
What is 4chan’s user demographic?
This is an extremely difficult question to answer. The short answer is that it is impossible to know. The long answer is that most 4chan is just there to read. These people are commonly referred to as Lurkers. Lurkers are anonymous and are technically 4chan users. If we reduce users to posters, it gets clearer, but only from muddy to murky. There have been attempts to get poster information from 4chan, but these surveys are often prone to pranksters and trolls. The best estimates are based on the good faith of the 4chan community. The site’s previous owner claimed that any attempt to get the site’s demographics was doomed to fail, and any datasets were worthless.
What do you think about 4chan?
It is a wonderful enigma, but not for the faint of heart. Most memes and other internet culture phenomena are born there.

And the discussion is not moderated by “internet points” or “karma” or “likes”. That, combined with anonymity, means each post is judged on its own merits. And with the culture of anonymity, there is no motivation to act based on fame, popularity, etc.
This results in interesting behaviour. What happens when humans technically interact, but we’ve stripped away so many of the normal components of social interaction? Well, your brilliance and hate, admiration and hate, helpful advice and trolling. You get something weird and rough and unique. Even though I don’t participate much, I can’t stay away. Once you’ve experienced it long enough to understand it, you don’t want to give it up.
Does 4chan have a right to exist?
Moot has the right to run his site as he sees fit. He doesn’t censor. As a result, it’s loaded with all kinds of offensive shit.
4chan has about 22 million unique visitors a month and about 800,000 posts a day. Its Alexa rank is generally around 700, though it’s been as high as 56.
Some people don’t want to be babysat on the Internet, even if others think they should be.
