How can I switch from testing to development in Cognizant?
I am going with the assumption that you are a trainee and you want to switch from testing to programming.
It is tough to make the switch now, and I know you would like to be a developer rather than a tester.
Since I know about careers, let me give you a better option that could be an attractive career option depending on your interest.
See if you can get into Performance testing. It is a career that needs knowledge of Java, and there are only a few people in this space. It is a completely technical space and could form the foundation for a leap into a Performance Architect role.
Performance architects are rare, and in a largely online world, you will be in demand to stop these businesses from crashing. You will get to do development and, at the same time, work in a fairly exclusive space.
Everything depends on how you work towards your goal. Don’t expect it to come to you. You have to take an interest and make it happen. Considering it is within testing, it is easier to move to performance testing rather than trying to get into a development team (where you will be swallowed up anyway since there are many programmers around).
Wish you all the best!!
How can I switch from testing to development in Cognizant?
To switch from one technology to another within a company is difficult but possible. One of my friends (in Cognizant) switched from Environment Delivery Team to Performance Testing. But firstly, he established a good relationship with the Performance Testing manager, and in parallel, he convinced his manager to release him. Things will be easier if both the managers are friends. You have to play wisely to switch the domain.
Rather than switch the domain within the company, I suggest learning the language and then cracking the interview with another company. This will give you two benefits: one, your domain will be changed, and second, you will get a good hike.
What are EA and EM in Cognizant?
There are Four Ratings in Cognizant
1. EA
2. EM
3. MA
4. Ms

EA stands for Exceed All
EM stands for Exceed Most
MA stands for Meets All
MS stands for Meets Some
Now, talking about EA and EM. They are the two top ratings in the Cognizant ratings system.
A person who gets EA is the best Performer, and a person who gets EM ratings is the second-best Performer in their deliverables. There are some percentages set by HR that only that Percentage of people can get EA and EM ratings. On Your ratings, your incentives and Promotions depend. So try to be the Performer and get your best ratings.
Is it worth working for Cognizant?
I joined Cognizant in 2016 after working in TCS for nine years, and it is not in the current scenario due to the reasons.
- In terms of strategy and running business, CTS is at least five years behind its peers in terms of their ways of thinking, and also, most of their strategies need to be revised and more applicable in the current scenario.
- The employee pyramid is too top-heavy and inverted, with at least 10% of the workforce at AVP and above level. Also, people at AD and above get promoted in 3 years like clockwork for doing the same stuff, which is ridiculous.
- Lot of work duplication with the same role being performed by different teams
- The delivery organization is very poor as there are few delivery managers with enough experience handling large projects.
- Promotions and higher ratings will be given only to the leaders, and a lot of favoritism will be shown to people who are the manager’s churches.
- If you display a little talent, you will be immediately sidelined out of fear that you will perform better and have a better idea.
- They need help to win new deals due to incorrect pricing strategies.
In summary, it is an organization where you can spend the last ten years of your career without pressure and clockwork-like promotions. It will not help you grow and enhance your skills simply because the leaders need more experience to guide you.
What are EA and EM in Cognizant?
In Cognizant, to evaluate the performance of an associate, four types of ratings exist:
1. EA(Exceeds All): If you get this Rating, consider yourself lucky because it is the first Rating given to top performers in the account. It plays a very important role in promotions; two consecutive EAs can do miracles for you.
2. EM(Exceeds Many): Officially, it is the second Rating given to associates 60โ70 percent. The audience ends with this Rating at the end of the cycle, so you can consider this Rating given to average account performers.
3. MA(Meets All): Third Rating and probably the last Rating in any normal performance cycle. If you are on the bench or your performance is very low in the manager’s eyes, it can be awarded to you.
4. MS(Meets Some): Normally, MA is the last Rating given to Associates, but in the last financial year, Cognizant growth was not very good and up to the mark, so this Rating was awarded to so-called ‘Poor’ performers to kick them out from the Organisation.
Hopefully, you are clear with this.
What are the designations given by the testing team at Cognizant?
Your designation will be the same as a developer.
But you will be tagged to the QA group.
If you are fresher, then you will be
- PAT (Programmer Analyst trainee).. package will be the same for developers and QA
- After one year of completion, you will be a PA (Programmer Analyst)… The package will be the same for developers and QA.
- Based on your performance, your next designation will be “Associate.” If your performance is very good, then the minimum time to become an “Associate” is a total experience of 2.5 years; otherwise, it may take 3โ4 years as well. The salary is different for developers and QA. Developers’ salary is around 40โ50K higher than QA.
- Suppose you became “Associate” in three years, then the next designation is “Senior Associate.” This designation depends on your manager’s nomination. The minimum time is 2โ3 years; the maximum can be more than five years after becoming an “Associate.” Salary is different for developers and QA.
- Previously, there was the designation of the project manager, or exactly, I don’t remember, but now, after becoming “Senior Associate,” your designation will be “Manager.” No time limit.
- So after this, “Senior Manager,” “Associate Director,” “Director,” & goes on.,
How is the SAP basis domain for freshers at Cognizant?
As from the above answers, Basis is the only domain in which you can be the administrator of systems..if you are from a CS background, I would suggest even trying to be in Basis..if you like coding and data structure, then don’t be in any domain of SAP..in ABAP also you would not get pure development. You need to customize things that already have been developed by SAP.
I started my career as an SAP-based in cognizant as a fresher..and I haven’t learned anything to date..that might be because I don’t want to be in the administration domain. Now, I have switched to Java in other organizations, and I am happy with it.
SAP basis is a vital domain in the IT industry, and many aspiring professionals are eager to learn more about this domain, especially for freshers at Cognizant.

What is it like working at Cognizant as a PAT in SAP?
I started my first job as PAT in Cognizant in September 2015. 2 batches, 20 students each, were made for sap basis and sap abap. Training started in the Chennai ASV campus. The training was basically of being on time and calling SAP “S,” A,” and” P.”
Everyone got their projects fast and quickly, as training was just for 30 days. As expected, we had no learning and were deployed in the real world of managers and upper dept. I got Pune lucky for me. The first day of the project was like managers thought I knew everything. But later, as time passed and I got my hands dirty, I understood the project.
Being in a support project(as most projects are in CTS), I saw myself as a soldier ready to march to the office 24/7, even on national holidays and birthdays, too (it sucks).
Now, I am in America to pursue my master’s after being in CTS for 2.8 years; think about my journey there. I miss Pune and my friends.
What is it like working in Cognizant?
Nothing extraordinary or glamorous. It’s a typical IT services firm with clients spread across the globe, but the majority in the US and some significant portion in Europe. Projects typically range from setting up IT services, transforming IT infrastructure & processes, and maintenance & support.
Your experience and perspective also depend upon at which stage you join – entry-level, mid-level management, managerial position, or executive level.
You will find some really sharp people at the top managerial and executive levels, but below that, mostly average profiles – typical engineering graduates from average engineering colleges. You will need help finding IITian or NITian or good colleges such as BITS Pilani.
At managerial and beyond that, your decision-making and application skills are tested well, and the learning curve will also be good, if not very good. It would be a standard learning and growth curve at entry and mid-level.
Remember, it’s a typical tier 2 services firm, so that you can expect something other than super sharp learning or growth. People generally stick here for two reasons – low/average work pressure and hope of onsite. Perhaps onsite is the only hope that keeps people hooked here. Secondly, if you enter at entry level and spend a good amount of time, your skill development would be very average, and your market value would decline. So, if someone is entering this company at entry level in a typical engineering profile, one should quickly leave by two years; otherwise, you will be stuck because your market value would decline for any good switch.
A typical day would start at 9:30 -10 AM, attend some meetings, take some onsite calls, and plan for the day. By this time, it would be lunchtime. You will spend 30โ40 mins at lunch and then 30 minutes on campus walking, chatting, taking a cigarette break, etc. Your actual work would start after lunch. You will do some coding/testing; then, it will be snack time. You will again end up an hour in this. After you return, you will start wrapping up for the day, and in an hour or so, you will pack your bag and time for leave. During the entire day, other possible activities could be the gym, some sports, some events, some training, a lot of gossip, etc. This is how you will spend your days, weeks, months, years, and overall career.
I never wanted this lifestyle or career progression, so I changed it. Few people I have seen were able to change everything. I call them rebellion. I was lucky also, but more than anything, it was my passion to excel. I moved to Business Analyst within a year and did amazing there. Then, I went on to do an MBA from an IIM and now work as a Strategy Consultant. It was never an easy journey, but as I said, it was a rebellious attitude.
So, this was my Cognizant experience for you. Hope you find it useful.
Do let me know if you have any other inputs.
What are the best aspects of working at Cognizant?
I have worked in CTS for four years, starting my career as a PAT.
- As a fresher, like every MNC, you don’t have a choice to pick your stream. You may have been recruited for your development skills, but you can be put in testing.
- Everything depends on your manager. Your YEA is all that matters. Besides that, they have added new policies like RDP and quarterly Goal settings, which are mandated for you, but the person evaluating won’t even look at it.
- At the time of Rating, many supervisors may change your Reporting supervisor at the very last moment so that the new one will say that I don’t know much about your work and we will give you a better rating next time.
- Coming to RDP, which is mostly an overburden for the employees, people working in different technologies are forced to complete different e-learning and clear exams in 3 attempts. CTS needs to trust its employees’ technical skills; you must complete 9 hours even if you have any work.
- In the year 2017, there was only one Promotion that happened in October with the added condition that if you have been on the bench for even a single month, you are not eligible for Promotion; how does this make any sense as in my case my efforts made the project a successful go live and I was on the bench because my project ended successfully, the reward I got was denial of Promotion, next Promotion will be in July 2018 probably.
- Despite failing to fulfill the promotion criteria, many people got promoted if only their manager recommended it. So, your actual project work is less worthwhile than your manager’s feedback.
- Depending on the project, you may get a good learning experience or end up in a support project raising incident and defects tickets, which even a nontech person can do.
- Whatever points I have mentioned are true, and I have experienced every single one. I am extremely sorry for writing so many negatives, but currently, CTS has more negatives than positives.
- I suggest you try it, but the moment you feel stagnated at any point, decide to leave the Organisation.
How good is EAS-IPM in Cognizant for a PAT?
What can I do for six months before joining Cognizant?
Caution: Please bear with my English, vocabulary& spelling mistakes.
I am apt to answer this question because I was in the same phase a few months beforeโฆI was offered an on-campus job by some X.Y.Z. company, which is an M.N.C., but I didn’t receive the date of joining for about a yearโฆI didn’t have any friends to hang out with ( I still don’t have any except a few colleagues who I have to talk to as a part of my profession), and yes, I still feel mentally distressed recollecting those moments when I used to spend time alone in the house. It was humiliating for me when my friends asked, “Hey!!! Didn’t you still join a job?? Didn’t you get a job??? “etc.
Lost in thoughts, sitting alone in the house, sleeping, dreaming that I would join tomorrow, I had put on nearly 20 kg of weight in 3 monthsโฆ.. Until something happened.
So what happened??
In 2015, my cousin gifted me a book that caught my attention after a year of suffering from dengue and lying in bed.
I don’t assert that I am in an elite position today, but I just want to shed some light on what I did to come out of mental trauma, which may help youโฆ
Firstly, don’t pity yourself by saying you don’t have friends, etc..โฆstop thinking, “I don’t, I can’t, “etc., because it is the prime factor that causes depression.
Later, these are a few things below that may help you
Reading: Start reading whatever you like (fiction or nonfiction) because they leave you in a state of imagination. Books are the greatest friends ever. They make a static brain to think dynamically.โฆ start reading, friend; I bet you won’t regret it.
Learning: I don’t know which department in B.tech you are from, but I, being a computer student, started learning ..brushing up on all the old concepts, I went on to learn many new technologies like android, springs, databases, etc. It is not mandatory to join a coaching center for this; the internet is the best repository of knowledge, so start learning new technologies. In today’s competitive world, it is not worth a second to stop..you need to be a runner, buddy!!!
Find Internships: After you learn, start applying for internships..remember as you are just starting your career, don’t expect a salary or stipend.. try gaining learning experience.
So, where can you apply for internships???
Many platforms like Internshala would offer you internships in elite institutions like I.I.T.’S, etc., or you can personally mail a few professors from reputed institutions you want to work within a particular domain.
Skill sets always matter here.
So don’t think, Do it !!!
REGULAR EXERCISE: Mental and physical fitness are the only ingredients that make you strong. So practice yoga, swimming, running, or whichever sport you are interested in, along with meditation, which boosts your concentration.
Eat healthy, Stay fit!!!
EXPLORE YOURSELF: Every person has the inner him/her whose interests vary depending on their profession. So know him, nurture him because, who knows, it may become your main source of income later or something that satisfies you mentally. Never regret later by telling your son or daughter, “I wanted to be this, but situations did not permit, “etc. Instead, give it a try.
So what did I do??
I knew I was interested more in jotting down my thoughts (because I didn’t have any close friends with whom I could share them)..so Writing, making a short film, etc., are the mediums through which you can make your thoughts reach others..so I improved my writing skills( I know I have to improve them more, but I was worse before), learned film-making to translate all the thoughts buried in me into a visual medium.
As you said, you have no friends; you might also have thoughts that cannot be shared and want to share them. So buddy, start a blog and start writing or express your hidden ideas through some form of art in your most comfortable ways and means.
- There are many companies recently introducing automation, and Cognizant is one of them, so please don’t completely rely on that jobโฆ. because the future is going to be more and more competent every second you spend on improving yourself, making yourself capable would be worth more, so start something side-by-side in which you are interested, in which your passion lies and one which keeps you awake.
- Let us keep running, my friend, because it is not worth waiting. Take care!!!.
Can a less than 60% candidate join cognizant even after being placed on campus?
Originally Answered: Can a candidate with less than 60% join cognizant even after being placed on campus?
The question came to me at the right time. I may be eligible to answer this question.
I got less than 60% (59.4%) in the 12th. I was told in my college that candidates below 60 are not eligible for this attempt, but still, I dared to attend. I told my friend I don’t have 60% and will attend by mentioning a round-off figure of 60% in my CV. He was against this idea and warned me about the consequences. At most, my application would be disqualified; that’s it. I was ready for that.
And I landed up for the interview. While interviewing, my certificates were verified, and the interviewer asked me if I didn’t have 60%. I was nervous in answering it but managed to grab a breath and replied like a boss, “I don’t think marks should be primarily considered in the hiring process. It’s the knowledge that should be tested and not the marks. I couldn’t score well in math, chemistry, and physics but scored well in computers, which will be tested here“. (My technical round went well, scored 8/10).
The interviewer was impressed with this answer (I could guess that since I got selected), and while leaving his table, I asked him how I was to him. He said, “Your confidence will help you go long.”
I am not praising myself with this answer; it’s just a matter of fact that marks don’t matter. I am just confident enough to pass through such situations without fear.
You can get through the interview if you have the confidence and knowledge that can overpower your low marks. The actual purpose of having an interview is to know the interviewee personally and judge him/her if he/she is fit for the company.
If you have low marks, you would have a genuine reason; if not, let your knowledge speak. It will do wonders.
Bottom line, two things to note here are:
- I was just slightly below 60%. The second time I was afraid of losing this chance of getting into C.T.S. was during my induction when I was made to wait to verify my marks from my college and even from school. The H.R. Team there called my college, and the school verified it. I was the last one to clear the induction session and get details of my training. The name of my school helped me go through this (Kendriya Vidyalaya); I was so thankful to the person who told me this. 59.4% marks and the rest of my luck placed me past 60%.
- Reason for the low marks: I had a genuine reason and the right answer for this question that asked me for low marks. If you can manage to explain to them your marks, you’re clear to go. I also didn’t let anyone in my colleagues know that I have <60% in 12th. One of the scariest risks I’ve taken. The worst thing that could’ve happened after this was my college losing the reputation for C.T.S. and me being suspended from attending other interviews.
One catch here: I was brave enough to take this risk.
I hope this helps you in the way it should and you expected it to be.
All the best for your future.
Cheers!!
Edit 1: In case of queries, please drop a personal message here. I’ll get back to you as soon as possible. Please refrain from contacting me on any medium other than my Quora profile.
Edit 2: Considering I.T. companies’ condition right now, it doesn’t matter how much you score. You’re the right fit if you know how to use a mouse & keyboard. I won’t demoralize you or the company you’re getting into; this is a fact. Few people are passionate about the job, no doubt about that. But I cannot bear the stress & fear my juniors are going through just because they have low marks.
Even if the companies reject you for the low marks, several other companies are out there. I trust you, you will find a job. Don’t belittle you.
You’re a rockstar.
