And they don’t mind roaming around the smaller NATO allies in the region and testing their F-16s’.

Whilst this speed couldn’t safely be obtained in the standard atmosphere, the Blackbird SR-71 flew at 85,000 ft, with minimal air resistance. Allowing for this speed of flight.

The MiGs are made with a limited amount of titanium. If they were, they’d likely withstand the higher Mach numbers. However, note that it cannot CRUISE at these highest speeds. Its optimal cruise (still using afterburner, but not maxing the engine) is around 2.3 match.

The fastest manned JET aircraft was the SR-71, which was last retired (the B variant) from NASA in ’99. The SR-71 would cruise at Mach 3.1 to 3.3 for over an hour because the J-58s were effectively “Turbo RAM Jets”. At Mach 1.5, it would convert mainly into a RAM Jet mode, making it more efficient the faster it flew. The top speed of the SR-71 is still classified. It’s only listed at 3.3+ to the public. The J-58s conical inlet spike, however, did impose an intake limit that probably brought the SR-71 to a comfortable top speed of 3.5 before the intake reached its peak efficiency. After which, the efficiency would drop, imposing the limit on total airspeed. Theoretically, the SR-71 could go much faster if the intake were to be modified in such a way as to allow faster air speeds for ingestion. By then, the speed limit would be limited by material melting points, like the MiG-25 and MiG-31. The only difference is that the SR-71 was mostly made of Titanium and advanced composites, unlike its MiG rivals. It, thus, had a far higher resilience to thermal stresses. This is just technical speculation, however.

The fastest manned Aircraft ever was the X-15, which was rocket-powered. This was a pure research vehicle and never saw standard use in any service other than experimental flights for NACA/NASA and the USAF. It reached a top speed of Mach 5.9 with the X-15A2 model, which used external fuel tanks to give it several more minutes of burn time.

X-43A is the fastest Aircraft currently recorded, with a top speed of 6.8 Mach. This is a hypersonic SCRAM Jet test bed, and it was a drone – unmanned.

The XB-70 (B-70 Project) Valkyrie was a HUGE bomber capable of Mach 3 flight. Today, it stands as the only other human-crewed Aircraft besides the MiG 25, 31, and SR-71 that could break the Mach 3 threshold as a Manned Air breathing aircraft. It was cancelled as a bomber well before the first flights and instead relegated to a Mach 3 sustained flight test bed for NASA. It was finally put to rest after a nasty midair collision.

There are lots of fast crafts out there, but the MiG-31 and MiG-25 hold the unique distinction of being the only authentic, usable, everyday, typical craft that is capable of achieving 2.8+ Mach and 100,000+ daily.

In my opinion, though, the XB-70 Valkyrie was the most ambitious.
